Struggling to climb Google’s rankings?
You might be missing one of the most overlooked SEO strategies for medical aesthetics clinics: local link building.
Backlinks are links from other websites to yours. They act like votes of confidence in Google’s eyes. But as a local med spa, you don’t need hundreds of links from random sites. You need quality local links that signal trust, relevance, and authority.
This is something I track closely using Semrush. When I audit med spa websites, the pattern is consistent: clinics that struggle locally often lack strong, relevant backlinks from trusted local and industry sources. Clinics that rank well usually have fewer links, but from the right places.
Watch my 60-second guide here:
Why Local Links Matter for Aesthetics Clinics
When someone searches for “lip filler Leeds” or “Profhilo near me,” Google doesn’t just look at your clinic website’s content. It looks at who else online is vouching for you.
A backlink from a local source, like your chamber of commerce, a local news outlet, or a nearby wellness business, acts as a signal to Google that you are a genuine, established, and relevant provider in your area.
These local trust signals are one of the fastest ways to boost your visibility in Google’s Local Pack (the map results) and improve your organic rankings.
How I Use Semrush to Build Better Local Links for Clinics
When planning a local link-building strategy, I use Semrush in my work as a Semrush Ambassador to understand which links will actually move the needle, not just add noise.

One of the first things I check is a clinic’s existing backlink profile using Semrush’s Backlink Analytics tool. This shows me where links are coming from, how authoritative those sites are, and whether the links are genuinely relevant to the clinic’s location and services.
Authority Score is particularly useful here. A local directory or business listing with real traffic and trust carries far more weight than dozens of low-quality directories. Semrush makes it easy to spot which links are helping build authority and which ones are doing nothing at all.
I also use Semrush to analyse local competitors. By reviewing which sites are linking to the top-ranking clinics in a specific city, it becomes much easier to identify realistic link opportunities, such as local press, chambers of commerce, suppliers, and community organisations.
This approach avoids guesswork. Instead of chasing links at random, clinics can focus on earning local backlinks that reinforce credibility, improve map visibility, and support long-term organic growth.

Where to Get Your First Local Links
Claim Your Directory Listings
Start with medical and aesthetics-specific directories. These are often already trusted by Google. Add your clinic to:
- The BACN (British Association of Cosmetic Nurses) directory or other medical professional directories
- Save Face or other organisations your clinic is accredited with
- Local chamber of commerce listings
- Any regional business directories in your surrounding area
- Manufacturers of products or services you use have websites where you can list as a supplier and get a link back to your website.
Make sure your clinic’s Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP) are consistent everywhere you list it.
Leverage High-Authority Platform Content
Beyond traditional directories, consider creating valuable content on established platforms that can link back to your clinic. Publishing expert insights on LinkedIn, educational articles on Medium, or contributing to industry publications can generate high-quality backlinks while positioning you as a thought leader.
This parasite SEO approach for medical aesthetics allows you to build authority and earn links from platforms with significantly higher domain authority than your clinic website. When done ethically and with proper compliance, these content-driven links can be more valuable than traditional directory submissions.
Partner With Complementary Businesses
Think about businesses your ideal patients already visit. Gyms, yoga studios, wellness centres, salons, and health spas. They all serve a similar audience which is an opportunity for you to:
- Swap guest blog posts
- Run joint promotions or giveaways
- Feature each other on social media with backlinks in the captions or profiles
Get Featured by Suppliers or Manufacturers
If you use a well-known brand like Juvederm, Profhilo, or Obagi Medical Skincare, ask them to feature your clinic in their “clinic spotlight” or “success stories” section. These brands have strong domain authority which means a link from them is gold for your SEO.
Sponsor Local Events & Get Press Coverage
Sponsoring a charity fun run, local sports team, school or community festival can get your clinic mentioned (and linked) on event websites, local news articles, and social media posts.
Even a small sponsorship can generate big exposure.
Collaborate With Local Influencers
You don’t need national beauty influencers, just find local content creators in your local area who focusses on wellness, beauty, or lifestyle.
A blog post, Instagram story, or YouTube review from them with a link to your site can help you reach exactly the right audience.
How to Track Your Local Links
Keep a simple spreadsheet or use a free tool like Google Search Console to see which sites are linking to you. Check monthly so you can:
- See which links bring the most traffic
- Spot broken or outdated links you can update
- Identify opportunities to deepen relationships
Local Link-Building Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying low-quality links. Google can tell, and it may hurt your rankings
- Inconsistent business info. Make sure your NAP is the same across all listings
- Having a one-and-done mindset. Link-building should be ongoing, not a one-off
Local link building isn’t about chasing hundreds of backlinks. It’s about building genuine, relevant connections in your community and letting Google see those relationships.
